There's a really good article in Salon about the Republican War On Science. It's well well worth sitting through the short commercial for a day pass. It summarizes the different ways in which the GOP is fighting against reality in favor of their agenda and it also talks about the tendency of the media to present false information from industry lobbyists and religious nuts and give it equal weight to science, all in the name of "fairness" and "balance." And how industry, starting with the tobacco industry as far back as the 60s, has used this tendecy to intentionally create "controversy" on issues about which there really is no controversy. Examples being evolution, global warming, and obviously that cigarette smoking causes cancer and a variety of other diseases.
