It appears it shall be my lot to head off this weekend, alone and lonely, to Ikea to replace our 15 year old cheap bed. We like our bed, but for whatever reason, Ikea decided at the time to use a wooden center board with a brace that sticks out the bottom and braces it against the floor so it won't collapse. It's really just a little dowel nailed into the middle post that points down at the floor. Most beds instead use a tubular metal center board that doesn't require bracing. And in the years past, the wooden center brace has been damaged by normal wear and tear, primarily when the bed has been moved, and the result is it slips out of alignment and stops bracing anything and the wooden center board creeks and groans or occasionally lurches because without the brace it's not really strong enough. I notice that Ikea has now moved to the standard metal brace in the middle design.

Anyway, off on a 4 hour round trip to Ikea to bring us back a nice new Malm bed. Unfortunately while the three of us and a lot of packages fit into the fit, there's no way I can think of to do the tetris to make us all fit while also fitting a queen size sideboard. Three people would fit, but not 2 people and a car seat because of where it's anchored. I'm prepping my mp3 player with a bunch of Eve podcasts and music. One of the nice bits on the fit is it has an auxiliary input, so I can play that without any hassles.

In other car news, our 12 year old Mazda is still going. It will need work before April to pass inspection, but given that I only drive it to and from work and then only in the winter or when i'ts too crappy outside to ride the scoot, we don't see much need to replace it. Even though we'd kind of like to.
