Today we are in mourning for the untimely death, nay murder, of the 8th Earl of Asherton and his sometime professional companion Barbara Havers. Yes, after starting into them a little bit after Nora was born, we've reached the last DVD of the Lynley series. Apparently the series was despite good ratings simply cancelled mid-production, with only 2 of the ordered 4 episodes of the last series being shot and the two actually filmed buried and aired at a later date. It apparently left the cast as well as fans a bit stunned and there's never been an adequate explanation.

I will miss it and it really does feel like the series died when it was just hitting its prime. I personally was delighted with the departure of the first actress to play Helen, who it seemed to me had absolutely no chemistry with Parker/Lynley and I wasn't sorry to see the character depart period. I also liked what seemed like a bit grittier tone, though there are whisperings that having a child murder featured during the time the Madelaine McCann disappearance might have played a part in the cancellation. It was also rather annoying that after enduring several seasons of shoddy DVD production by PBS, we only got 2 episodes in proper anamorphic widescreen instead of a hardwired letterbox.

We're rapidly running out of mystery series to watch.
