Cold But Nice
Jan. 13th, 2025 11:01 amWe had a nice weekend. Nick was in a good mood. He did Ninja in the morning and spent the rest of Saturday at Fox/Nate's. We made a deconstructed won-ton soup, which turned out amazing, and was stupid easy to make, particularly compared to something that actually involved wrapping wontons. After that, we picked up Nick and brought his friend Sofia back to her house, which is like a mile from Nate's so stupid easy.
I don't think he got enough studying in and he's very nervous about midterms, but I'm sure he'll do fine. I find it very relaxing knowing that the school is oriented around the IB and not other grade-oriented stuff. So they don't have an honor roll. They don't obsess on that. The point is to pass the exam. Very ironic that a high stakes test leads to less focus on testing and grades. And it's not that he's doing poorly or anything, but the Nauset honors thing that required all As with no way for one course to balance for another was really stressful because he really wanted the high honors.
An article dropped citing the bullying problems at Nauset. Apparently they drove some kid to attempt suicide. I hope this actually does something.
The weather was pretty lousy and I was worried it was going to drop below freezing when we were picking up at night, but it stayed above, so just a little slush.
Sunday we took it easy and made the Cooks Illustrated French Bread pizza recipe, which suggests oiling the crust of the bread and pre-baking it with garlic oil brushed on the top. Essentially garlic bread as a crust. It was absolutely incredible. Though it may also have been the fresh sauce.
And I played some Fallout 76 and finished reading Chef's Choice. And generally, we just had a pleasant time.
Work was unwelcome. Or really the 6:15 alarm was unwelcome. I'm really dragging today for whatever reason. I slept well and really fully, but whatever.
We saved the last episode of Vera and watched the latest drop of Shetland, then did a rewatch of the HBO Dune movie because neither of us really remembers it from when it was first on. Not that we don't know the story as we've read the book and seen the movie and mini-series. It's hard to believe that this was regarded as unfilmable as both the HBO film and the SciFi miniseries were quite good. The 80s movie. Not so good. Not at all.
