We had a power outage last night and I come in and my server is beeping. This is the brand new server with all of our new and current financial and payroll information on it. So I've had this happen before, I reboot and expect it to come up and tell me one of the drives isn't working and it will rebuild the array. No, two of the drives are offline and one isn't communicating physically with the server.

We go through a bunch of steps and rebuild (takes an hour and a half) and nothing. The disk isn't being found. So now we're going through a second rebuild, but I don't have much hope. At best, if it comes up after this, I need to reinstall the entire operating system and hope the data on the other partition is still around. At worst, I need to do a low level reformat and rebuild everything.

And I have absolutely no clue when the last tape backup was done. I changed the tape last tuesday before I left for thanksgiving and when I came in yesterday it had been ejected. But I can't remember whether the log said it had succeeded or failed. So I really have no idea whether I have a good backup. Even that would still mean one or more days of reentering information.

And I don't even have the option of looking at the tape until I get this server up and running because it's the only one with a tape drive.
