It was a weekend.

Friday night was supposed to be a simple network upgrade. Switching out our 10/100 switches for 10/100/1000 switches. And it went horribly wrong. Things didn't talk to one another and then I finally figured out that one entire switch wasn't functioning.

That's of course after moving those 75 or so little plugs turning my fingers numb and breaking a nail.

So I give up and start to move those 75 or so plugs back to the original hubs. And I find the problem after moving about 50 back. In the ratsnest that our network room is, a cable was plugged in twice, looping back. I unplugged it and ran test and now everything is fine. So now I move the 50 back to the new hubs and do some tests and everything is great! except it's 7:00 not 4:15. And I'm exhausted.

Made pizza that night, which came out really good. Saturday I made some roast chickens which seemed to go over well. I'm afraid I'm going to pack pounds onto Gabby though :) Not sure what her usual eating tendencies are.

Yesterday we finally got to The Lobster Pot. We'd been planning to take Gabby there when she was going to be visiting for a day or two, rather than living with us as a refugee. It was tasty. One of the best lobsters I've had in forever actually. Ptown's quieting down. The Portuguese bakery was closed early so no fried dough for us. We did find some good ice cream though.

I guess that's about it. My druid is 23 and my huntress is 13 and I'm enjoying her a lot. I got a black scorpion and a red raptor as pets. And I switched from bows to guns, which was a silly expense, but why not. I just wish I could have more pets. There are so many cute ones.

Well Massachusetts is joining the lunatics in favor of faith based initiatives, but in this case it's the Holy Temple of Linux rather than Christianity. They're mandating that everything run open source formats. Which essentially means that nobody but a group of open source cultists will be able to use any of the documents that the commonwealth puts out. It seems like the only viable option for distribution is PDF, which has it's own problems, most important one being that half the PDFs the commonwealth puts up are scans and not editable text.

The best single thing for us was when the commonwealth started to put things into MS Office formats. No, I don't like Bill Gates. I don't like monopolies. I don't like the endless updates or lack of security. But I do like software that works and that people understand and can open. And MS Office qualifies on both of those and some obscure format that Office doesn't open most certainly does not.

I'd love to see Office's file formats pried open, but that's only going to happen on a federal level. And Mass cutting off it's nose to spite it's face is just going to mean more work for the rest of us.
