Oh here's a great story from Canada.

There are a couple of factual errors in that, but otherwise pretty good (there is no LAW supporting the HBIGDA here, and given that the Cluck no longer can say the gov't should pay for the surgery, there are =plenty= of people not bothering with the gatekeepers there anymore).

are there laws supporting the HBIGDA anywhere?

Not that I know of. Time used to be (pre-1995) that the government provided SRS as part of the public health insurance, but in 1995 the then-Conservative government cut off the funding. About six months before I would have been recommended, as it happened. Fuckers.

Given what I've seen from varied results, I'd say you dodged a bullet.

Yah. I spoke to someone recently who'd been for her surgery 16 years ago, and said she'd had nothing but problems. Whereas...well, you know as well as I do what a job Chet does. So I'm luckier in some ways.

Still, an extra nine years of the low-lying rage didn't do me any good, either.

oh, and it says:
By law she would need to live as a woman for two years before beginning the process.
isn't the HBIGDA standard one year? (It's been a while since I've read them.)

The strictest version wanted two: first year without HRT, second with. The Cluck ALWAYS used the strictest version.

And after a year, there's no guarantee they'll give you HRT. If you're not girly enough for them, no hormones for you!

Plus, their endo felt me up - in ways non-medical - when they did my initial exam. I was so scared that he might be able to kick me out of the programme that I just let him, and said nothing.

good article.

it mentions that she took the name Jade after a character in her own writing. as it turns out, I did the same thing.

Ok, so I read the article, think "what a great kid!" and then I think "finally, someone who has bigger feet than me!"

I'm so shallow today.

I just think it's terrific that she felt comfortable enough to begin the process in high school. I was close with the first openly lesbian student at my school, and I know that while many people were totally supportive of her coming out, she dealt with animosity too. It seems like Jade avoided most of that, which is just wonderful. No doubt it helps her feel even better about being openly who she really is.

Thanks for putting this article in! I collect news articles like this; do you have a source for such, that alerts you to trans-friendly articles?
