Well, I finally gave in and just spent an absolutely obscene amount of money on Absinthe. We ran out perhaps two years ago and have missed having it around.

So, we have four bottles on the way. Deva which was the highlight of our last order, a nice herby absinthe. Pernod, the real original stuff from France. And two we don't really know much about La Cour and Montana, both of which are high in Thujone.

For those who aren't aware, if you are willing to pay a ludicrous amount for shipping, Absinthe is readily available through the internet.

aww, wish i'd have known :) hehe... spiritscorner is a good starting point for the absinthe noobie, but when you're ready for the really good stuff, go to absintheonline.com and fork out some bucks for the Jade Liquers or Un Emile brands... they're like heaven on the pallette (sp?)

oh... and forget about thujone. that's just a silly buzz word with shady reports and studies that once were used against what was becoming a threat to the wine industry at the turn of the century... and now are used to support the sales of lesser products.

*grins* yes, i'm an absinthe snob, sorry lol.

It is made with wormwood, which contains a chemical called thujone which is supposedly a very mild hallucinogen. Wormwood tea is used "to induce dreams" and in my experience it quite does that. It also tastes horrible. Absinthe tastes much nicer :)

It was demonized in the early part of the century and banned most places. Supposedly it drove people to madness and such. Given it's alcohol content (55-70% alcohol) and the volumes that people reportedly drank, it probably did that, but it was probably not the wormwood. Now it's legal for sale because of the EU treaties. Since there is no real evidence it does harm and it was legal in part of the EU, it is legal in all of the EU.

The only real effects I've noticed are a slight improvement in the quality of colors. The world starts to look a bit like the movie Moulin Rouge.

There's a whole mystery and ritual to the drink. It's clear, but when mixed with cold water, which is how you drink it, it turns cloudy because the chemicals are coming out of solution.
