Well I did my usual weekend update. But that's not all I did. I played ATITD Telling 3/Beta 2 like a maniac.

I'm playing as Numtini and joined up with a nice little guild. Like me, a lot of them have either dabbled before or played Telling 1 and gave the 2nd a miss. We have our own small valley, fairly far out from the main area with universities, but with a cluster of schools nearby and within a reasonable walk for universities in both 7 Lakes and Lower Egypt. Someone hooked us up with a Ventrillo server (voice still intimidates me incredibly but everyone has gendered me as female so I guess it's fine *shrug*). We're about 50/50 men and women and most of us are over 30. And I'm not the oldest one in the guild, not by far. Which delights me. We have been going crazy building and such. I think we have what are close to the best facilities in Egypt and we had one of the first guild halls in our region after one of our less sane members got up early in the morning and made the 3-4 hour run to the one region that unlocked it. We contribute to unlocking fairly generously, but we're primarily a private guild looking to do our own thing. I think it's a nice balance.

My feelings about the game remind me of the release of Star Wars Galaxies. I was just in love with being a tailor and with the complexity of the crafting system and also of being a pioneer in a game that was just starting. I had a drive that I don't think I've ever felt before or since. Until now. ATITD has so many of the same addictive progress qualities that I loved being a (pure) crafter in SWG. And the same kind of neat little community, in fact, even more so. It might be the jinx, but I signed up for a year to get all the goodies and the gaudy chat box, though I declined the tee shirt. And also just to support such an interesting little independent developer.

At this point I just am impatient for release. I want to do a lot of things that really aren't suitable for beta. Mainly breeding beetles and flowers. We have another woman in the guild interested in flowers. And I find myself thinking too much about "the future" and of course this beta world has no future.

Sounds interesting. Currently, our obsession is Guild Wars but since it's free to play that leaves room for another pay-to-play MMO, lol. You've seen a lot of the games that I've talked about enjoying over the years... Do you think I would enjoy A Tale in the Desert? Keep in mind that I liked some aspects of Second Life but overall the game drove me bonkers because of the buggy/annoying movement mechanics and the incessant requirement to be "social". I'm still a bit more action-oriented and need that "something to do" element to keep my interest in a game. Also, Eve Online didn't quite do it for me because the combat was too abstract and there was too much downtime just traveling from system to system.

Well downtime in ATITD can be... extreme... Travel is one of those limiting features pushing community. On the other side, there are things to do. You build things. Some of this can be a click fest. But it's very social.

It's in a beta right now and is free until the end of the month. www.atitd.com Just download the client and run it, select the beta server, and it'll give you the option to create a character. (No credit card or any other irritants.)

Did they miss your deadline?

Game goes live the 27th supposedly. So you have plenty of time :)

They claim it's working. I have a sync (and have since Friday). But no packets come back to me.

They've got a trouble ticket open. The last time I got it hooked up, it took 2 weeks to get it right...

Well at least if you have sync, you know you're not outside the service area or something.

Yeah, I knew that when I turned on my machine and found a half-dozen other wireless networks. Our cable provider doesn't do cable modems, so they had to be DSL connetions...

So, just attach to one and go!

I remember the pure days of SWG...that was just the best, wasn't it? Thanks for giving my mind a little jump start on those pleasant memories!

I just saw this incredibly complex and deep design. I could never have imagined that they would be so absolutely incompetent.

They announced they're doing an NGE of the NGE. That will be what? The fifth combat system in the game? What a complete and utter joke.

You'd think they'd have just given up and cut their losses...a year ago.
