We Are(N'T!) Wizards
Oct. 14th, 2011 11:39 amI like Harry Potter. I like fandom. I like documentaries about fandom (highly recommend Darkon & Monster Camp). Here's this movie about Harry Potter fandom. What could go wrong?
Ugh. What a creepy 80 minutes.
I'm not sure what was the most offputting. The movie was terribly edited. But it was more than that. The fandom depicated certainly didn't resemble any sort of fandom that I've ever seen. Fandom is cooperative. It's a coming together of people with a shared love for things. This seemed so one sided -- a semi-pro middle layer of content providers that were providing content to basically idle consumers (many of which seemed bored to tears). The fact that the content providers were primarily adults catering to pre-adolescent and early adolescent kids lent the whole thing a kind of creepy pedo vibe. And the two kids in a wizard band that were profiled were a case study in hyperactive neglected kids with the parents more interested in being wizard celebrities for the 12 year old set than taking care of their little ones.
Weird creepy look at some creepy people.
